Gasoline is one of the most expensive sources of energy. \u00a0The process of its production is very complicated and includes primary and secondary stages of oil processing at refineries as well as the introduction of various additives.<\/p>\n

In practical terms, oil refineries use such additives as MTBE<\/b> (Methyl tert-butyl ether) and ETBE<\/b> (Ethyl tert-butyl ether) to obtain gasoline with defined characteristics. \u00a0In general, additives constitute not more than 8 to 10% of the total amount of substances in gasoline. \u00a0Of course, the price of the finished product is heavily influenced by the price of the additives.<\/p>\n

It is therefore, oil refineries, as well as traders, that find it very important to price the additives in a proper way. \u00a0Nowadays, the coefficient-factor<\/b> helps to indicate the price ratio index ‘additive-petrol’ and reflects a correlation among the petrol components that is of great practical value. \u00a0Table 1 shows the coefficient-factors as of August-November 2010.<\/p>\n

Mainly, the MTBE<\/b> price has been determined by the 10 ppm petrol price as of August-November 2010. \u00a0In this case, the coefficient-factor was stable though it was low (1.1-1.18). \u00a0It is therefore, the import of MTBE<\/b> from the Persian Gulf countries that has been reduced. \u00a0Such additives as ETBE<\/b> was characterised by sufficiently high European prices (1070-1090 dollars per ton). \u00a0It was due to the fact that the price for ethanol in Europe was very high. \u00a0Additionally, there was an increase in ETBE<\/b> consumption in countries of the European Union as compared with MTBE<\/b> in accordance with the Directive 2009\/28\/EC. \u00a0Table 2 shows the European prices for fuels as of August-November 2010.<\/p>\n

The cost of raw material, used to produce ethers is considered to be the most important factor that determines the price of additives. \u00a0Approximately 50 % of the ETBE is accounted for fuel ethanol. \u00a0MTBE contains 33% methanol.<\/p>\n
